Dear reader,
I’d like to start off by thanking you for taking the time to read my work today. Capstone is a project that I and my fellow students have spent the last months working on and it means a great deal to finally present the fruits of this work to the world. In this cover letter I want to talk about the process of creating this Capstone Project as well as mention some of the struggles and triumphs of the journey.
First off in this process was selecting the topic. Warfare has been an interest of mine for years, going back to studying the revolutionary war back in First Grade. I’ve always been fascinated with the tactics and the weaponry employed by armies throughout different periods of history and over time my interest and knowledge of the subject has only grown. This made it the most obvious choice of my capstone project and one that I already had a good foothold for.
My research primarily centered around three angles, eras, tech, and casualties. I researched and divided the history of warfare into three very broad, very wide categories, ancient, medieval, and modern. Then I broke down the tech and tactics of each of these eras, and to wrap it up I looked at the costliest wars of each era and compared casualty rates over the duration of the war.
Some struggles I met during this project: The first one was trying to figure out how to narrow down such a broad category down into something manageable and coverable within the span of a 1500 word essay. Along with that I obviously had the struggle of adapting from working primarily in a school environment to working from home once distance learning began. With determination and patience I was able to chisel down my projects scope to something I could fit into my essay and manage to create a work schedule that allowed me to finish despite the change of scenery.
I believe my capstone topic is very important. Warfare is something that every human on the planet is affected by in one way or the other and every last one of us has very real feelings and opinions on warfare. I have always been passionate and fascinated by the study of warfare, however I also know how important it is to understand the cost that these fascinating conflicts came from.
In conclusion I wanted to make my essay and capstone project focus on something that I had immense personal interest in and something that has been a lifelong interest of mine. However I wanted to research my topic from a new angle that was more relevant to everyone.
With Best Regards,
Matthew Burkett
